Here is what wikipedia has to say about the surname Smith.

sure, that's all logical...but it's not really very exciting is it?

why is the surname Smith REALLY as common as it is?

John Smith is the actually one of the four great Patriarchs. John Smith, along with Genghis Khan, Ricardo Gonzalez (the first Argentinian to discover time travel), and Alexander the Great, is directly related to roughly 1/3 of the world's population.

Their breeding experiment continues nicely, and they're still gathering data.
